The best part of fish are the loins and fillets and these go directly to consumers. However, fillets and loins make up only about 35 percent of the fish that we buy. So what happens to the rest of the fish?
- Scales from Regal Springs Tilapia are used in the manufacture of collagen for cosmetics.
- Most skins are used in gelatine production for pharmaceuticals. Other skins are transformed into a high-fashion alternative to leather and tanning turns them into clothing accessories, such as belts.
- Fish oil and solids are separated in the production process to become animal feed and biodiesel fuel that powers trucks, generators and other equipment.
- Innards, frames and trimmings are transformed into a nutrient-rich compost that is given out free to local farmers.
